David DeBruyn returns to Breakfast Club of Grand Rapids to recall the many times that he had the opportunity to go where the sun doesn’t shine – at least for a short time. David, a long-time former member of the Breakfast Club, who wishes we would begin our programs some time in the late morning, has put together an interesting collection of solar eclipses from around the world.

David grew up in North Muskegon, attended the University of Michigan, and became lead curator at the new planetarium at Grand Rapids Public Museum, where he remained for 40 years, and is now Chaffee Planetarium Director Emeritus. But he has not given up the enthusiasm as he works with amateur astronomers at the Veen Observatory and also established the David L DeBruyn Digital Dome Theater Internship Fund at the U of M Museum of Natural History five years ago.

Some individuals strive to visit every single major league baseball parks, others attempt to sample every beer of the world – or even of Grand Rapids. David’s quest is astronomical.

Astronomy

  1. “Astronomy compels the soul to look upwards and leads us from this world to another.” – Plato
  2. “The history of astronomy is a history of receding horizons.” – Edwin Powell Hubble
  3. Sorry, I can’t come to work today. There’s an eclipse.
