 BREAKFAST CLUB OF GRAND RAPIDS

Established 1936 – John A. Collins, President

UNIVERSITY CLUB

10th Floor of the Fifth/Third Bank Building

111 Lyon St. N.W. #1025, Grand Rapids

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21, 2023   –  7:15 a.m.

Paul Chardoul, our esteemed Breakfast Club president, presented an excellent three-part series called "The Next Pacific War" in April and May of this year, which provided an excellent primer on the state of naval readiness for China and The United States. So, if there is a naval war on the horizon, who's going to fight it?

Lieutenant Commander Jessica Clark and Senior Chief Sypan of the United States Navy will present to us the state of recruitment in today's U.S. Navy. This will include the new standards for today's recruits, the opportunities available to them, and how recruitment is done today. We'll even hear a few good stories. And, depending on the new standards, perhaps some of us might be able to enlist or reenlist.

Invocator: Eric Nelson
Introducer: Jeff Kissinger

PLEASE NOTE: This will be the last breakfast we will have at The University Club. As we say farewell to the University Club, we hope you all have enjoyed our time with this fine venue and its excellent staff who have served us for over six years.

We will begin meeting at the Embassy Suites Grand Rapids Downtown on North Monroe beginning on July 19th, 2023, which is our next scheduled breakfast. More information will follow in the coming weeks.

Navy Recruiters

  1. A Navy recruiter asks a man “Do you know how to swim?”

The man replies, “Why? Have you run out of ships?”

  2. Recruiter: “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?”

    Recruit: “Alive, hopefully.”

  3. A US Air Force drill instructor stood in front of his new recruits.

"Recruit Bains!" He yelled. "Where did you enlist?"

"In California, sir," Bains replied. "There was an Air Force recruiting station next to a Navy recruiting station."

"Then why," the D.I. asked, "Did you choose the Air Force?"

"Because, sir," Bains answered. "What goes up must come down, but what goes down doesn't always come back up."
