WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2023 – 7:15 a.m.
We are welcoming back long-time former BCer David L. DeBruyn, astronomer par excellence. Following his graduation from the U of M in 1963, David was hired as Chief Curator of the Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium of the Grand Rapids Public Museum where he served for close to 40 years. Although “officially” retired, he remains active in the Great Lakes Planetarium Association, which he co-founded, and as president of the Grand Rapids Amateur Astronomical Association. He has regularly written astronomy articles for the Grand Rapids Press for more than 50 years. In order to provide opportunities for students of similar interests, David established the David L. DeBruyn Digital Dome Theater Internship Fund at the U of M Museum of Natural History that opened in 2019. He will entertain us with further adventures of the James Webb Telescopic Journey to the skies.
Invocation: Mr. Eric Nelson Introduction: James Booth Burr, Jr., Esq.
The Stars
(1) I took an astronomy class in college but it was harder than I expected. I had to study day and night.
(2) What’s the difference between Astrology and Astronomy? About 75 IQ points.
(3) Samantha didn’t get the astronomy scholarship she hoped for. But the school did name a cluster of stars after her. It was viewed as a constellation prize.
