For some reason Greece is not mentioned in the Book of Genesis; a country that is rich in tradition but has found itself in constant turmoil. Of more recent note, it threw off the yokes of the Ottoman Empire, rid itself of a military dictatorship and fought off the communists.  We have invited our leader, Paul N. Chardoul, to tell us where his Country of heritage is at with a talk entitled, “Current Conditions in Greece.”  Paul and his travel tour team have traveled to Greece several times to visit this now parliamentary representative democratic republic.  Modeled somewhat after England and India, the President of Greece is the head of state and the Prime Minister of Greece is the head of government within a multi-party system.  We will learn that legislative power is vested in both the government and the Hellenic Parliament.  Between the restoration of democracy in 1974 and the Greek government-debt crisis, the party system was dominated by the liberal-conservative New Democracy and the social-democratic PASOK.  Bring a guest – it could be worth a $10 gift certificate if you are the successful winner (if only one guest – automatic winner; more than one – draw for the lucky winner).

Invocator:   Mr. Eric Nelson

Introducer:   James Booth Burr, Jr., Esq.

Greece (1):   “The glory that was Greece, and the grandeur that was Rome.”
Edgar Allan Poe

Greece (2):   “I fear the Greeks even when they are bearing gifts.”
Vergil: Aeneid II.

Greece (3):       “Cassius: Did Cicero say anything?

Casca: Ay, he spoke Greek.

Cassius: To what effect?

Casca: Nay, and I tell you that I’ll ne’er look you in the face again: but those that understood him smiled at one another and shook their heads; but for my own part, it was [all] Greek to me.”  Shakespeare, Julius Caesar.
