Here is a red-letter date for you: March 11, 2020. This was the last day the Early Risers Breakfast Club of Grand Rapids met in person to enjoy breakfast together at The University Club. Our speaker that day was John D. Loeks who presented on his latest venture called Studio Park in the general area south of VanAndel Arena. That seems like a lifetime ago. Since then, many of us have had very little physical contact with our family and friends. As for our club, we have met on Zoom –  our virtual presentation lifeboat that has kept us connected and afloat in a sea of uncertainty fraught with divisive politics, fake news, Facebook scientists, social unrest, and a mounting COVID-19 death toll. But it appears that land may very well be in sight.

The COVID death toll in Michigan has been trending downward significantly in the past six weeks as our citizens get vaccinated and practice the proper COVID prevention protocols (minus those unwilling or incapable of washing their hands or wearing a mask properly). Even as new cases are reported, fewer people are getting as sick as they were when the virus first infiltrated our state.  Governor Whitmer has even relaxed some of her restrictions recently and will likely continue to do so as vaccination rates go up and infection rates go down. And, what’s more, nearly every member of the Breakfast Club has at least had the opportunity to receive one of the three available COVID vaccines.

Our meeting on March 24th will not have a speaker as we normally enjoy. Instead, we are going to meet as a club to discuss and decide on a plan to make our triumphant return to the University Club of Grand Rapids.

Invocator:    Mr. Eric Nelson

Meeting Agenda

  1. Determine who among us is vaccinated or plans to be vaccinated before June 2021 and decide whether proof of vaccination will be required to attend.
  2. Define and determine when dues payments will begin again and how that will be managed.
  3. Review the room and food options available to our group at The University Club.
  4. Review the safety protocols already in place at the University Club and determine the degree to which these constraints will affect the attendance of our members.
  5. Discuss a hybrid meeting option (in person and Zoom) and the technology needed to support it.
  6. Discuss Speaker availability and options with a hybrid meeting approach.
