We have invited the Poet Laureate of Grand Rapids, Ericka Thompson, to further our education, especially in the area of poetry. Now, the guys in my class at Central High left the rhyming stuff to our female counterparts.  Suddenly, when approaching post-high school studies, poetry made some sense.  Shakespeare, “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere,” and James Thurber cast a new light.  Our Poet Laureate, more commonly known as “Kyd Kane,” will let us know how she was appointed (it is a paying position) and what her experiences have been.  We might even get a sampling of her home-grown poetry.  No, you don’t have to bring your rhyming dictionary with you.  An interesting program to discuss at your next neighborhood get together. 2025?

Invocator:    Mr. Eric Nelson

Introducer:    James Booth Burr, Jr., Esq.

Poetry (1):  “I think poetry is indispensable, but to what I could not say.”  Jean Cocteau (a French artist, poet, novelist, dramatist, designer, boxing manager, playwright, moviemaker and actor.)

Poetry (2): “All bad poetry springs from genuine feeling.” Oscar Wilde

Poetry (3): “Poetry and consumption are the most flattering of diseases.”  William Shenstone (18th Century poet and landscape gardener)

Poetry (4): “Poetry is a religion without hope.”  Jean Cocteau
