A wise college professor of mine told me the difference a good four-year liberal arts college makes is that you are taught to dream. Some of his evidence is from George Bernard Shaw’s eight-hour drama “Back To Methuselah.” The play covers the dawn of time to some 20,000 years in the future. In the opening garden scene, Adam’s snake has many funny lines, some are thoughtful. One of his best is: “You see things; and you say “Why?” But I dream things that never were; and I say “Why not?” Education teaches us to dream, to educate ourselves. We have invited Robert Bartlett, President of a 14 collegiate consortium of liberal arts schools (Michigan Colleges Alliance) that some of us may have graduated from, or at least got kicked out of. Locally, we are lucky to have Aquinas, Calvin University and Hope. It is true that they do not compete athletically with State and Ann Arbor, but they have the ability to compete in the classroom. President Bartlett will tell about the many advantages of a smaller liberal arts college and the great opportunities that your grandkids might enjoy.
