Opera, in Grand Rapids, may be one of the best bargains until COVID-19 arrived.  We were blessed with performances from the Met out at Celebration Cinema and really live shows from our own Opera Grand Rapids.  Now opera is not enjoyed by all of us; there are those that would rather be “peaceful protesters,” say in Portland, Oregon. But what a treat for youngsters – including grandkids – to see as many as 130 people on stage with a full supporting orchestra.  We have invited Emilee Syrewicze, new executive director of Opera Grand Rapids, to tell us what they have in store for us this season, virus notwithstanding.  Three operas, including “Aida,” will bless the DeVos stage under less than ideal conditions.  Emilee will tell us about the programs, about opera in general, and what OGR is doing to accommodate the virus.  Even if your music is limited to singing in the shower, you will enjoy this presentation.

Invocator:   Mr. Eric Nelson

Introducer:   James Booth Burr, Jr., Esq.

Opera

  1. “A play representing life in another world whose inhabitants have no speech but song, no motions but gestures, and no postures but attitudes.” Ambrose Bierce
  2. “How wonderful opera would be if there were no singers.” Gioacchino Rossini
  3. “The opera …. is to music what a bawdy house is to a cathedral.” H. L. Mencken
