Canceling Notre Dame and Southern Cal? Canceling the Big Ten Football season? Can we save water polo and tiddly winks? Schools of “Higher Learning” frantically depend on cash from pigskin cow fields to pay for the athletic budgets amounting to millions and millions of dollars. How does this work out, at least on the local level? We have invited Tim Selgo, retired GVSU Athletic Director, to tell us about the pressures trying to exist and maintain a program without competition. What are his thoughts about what to do with scholarship people, how to keep programs in focus and, yes, how to balance the athletic budget.
Invocator: Mr. Eric Nelson
Introducer: Dr. Paul Farr
Sports:
(1) “The balls used in top class games are generally smaller than those used in others.” Paul Fussell (American cultural and literary historian, author and university professor.)
(2) “Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up in hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all the rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence: in other words it is war minus the shooting.” George Orwell
(3) “The more violent the body contact of the sports you watch, the lower your class.” Paul Fussell
